Phil Boudreault, a former Olympic boxer, has been committed to trial on charges of threatening violence against two police officers.

After a brief preliminary hearing Tuesday, Justice R. Flaherty committed Boudreault to trial on allegations he threatened two officers with the Greater Sudbury Police Service during a bail hearing April 20.

The bail hearing took place five days after Boudreault was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, relating to an incident in a Valley East drinking establishment in March.

Flaherty ordered a ban on publication of all evidence presented at Tuesday?s preliminary hearing.

After hearing the evidence, Flaherty said there was enough evidence to commit Boudreault to trial on two charges of threatening violence against two different officers and uttering death threats against both officers.

A charge of obstructing justice was withdrawn. Boudreault?s lawyer Glenn Sandberg conceded Boudreault was on probation at the time of this incident.

A date for Boudreault?s aggravated assault trial is expected to be set within the next couple of weeks, and at that time Sandberg said he hopes to get a date for a jury trial on this latest series of charges.

Boudreault had remained out of trouble with the law for more than two years before allegations surfaced about the incident in the Valley East bar in March.

Boudreault represented the Top Glove Boxing Academy and Canadian National Boxing Team at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

Boudreault, who is a member of the Hells Angels, was talkative and conversed with friends during the preliminary hearing.

Boudreault has been in custody at the Sudbury district jail since being denied bail in late April.
