UPDATED: One person taken to hospital after serious collision on Elgin Street

Police have closed down a section of the road. Cleanup is ongoing.

Elgin Street is once again open to traffic, said a press release issued by Greater Sudbury Police at 5 a.m. this morning.

GSPS Staff Sgt. Todd Lefebvre has confirmed that at least one person was taken to hospital following a serious motor vehicle collision on Elgin Street near Durham Street this evening.

"Information is still coming in so I'm not really sure how many people were taken to hospital but I know one person was taken for sure," said Lefebvre.

There is no information on the cause of the accident as of yet, or whether any charges have been laid.

"The road will remain closed while the Traffic Investigations Unit is on the scene," said Lefebvre.

Motorists are encouraged to take an alternate route and avoid the area for the time being.

Greater Sudbury Police have closed a section of Elgin Street between Durham Street and Minto Street following a collision involving four vehicles this evening.

A Sudbury Hydro truck is also on the scene as one of the vehicles struck and knocked over a light post.

Four vehicles sustained damage in the crash. A black sedan wedged between another black sedan and silver coupe sustained the worst of the damage and was nearly crushed in half.

Sudbury.com has contacted the Greater Sudbury Police to determine the cause of the accident and if any injuries were sustained, but we have not received a response at this time.
