Busy evening for GSPS results in four impaired driving charges

Greater Sudbury Police Service officers charged drivers in four different incidents related to impaired driving overnight and in to the early hours of the morning on Dec. 2.

Officers initiating a RIDE check on Barry Downe Road at Maley Drive checked the driver of a motor vehicle entering the spot check. While speaking with the driver, officers detected an odour of alcohol coming from the individual’s breath. 

The officer administered a road side screening test that registered a fail. Additional tests were undertaken and a 43-year old male from Greater Sudbury was charged with Over 80 mgs of Alcohol.

An officer on patrol observed a motor vehicle traveling approximately 40 km/h over the speed limit on the Kingsway. The officer conducted a traffic stop and while speaking with the driver, noticed obvious signs of impairment. 

The officer administered a road side screening test that registered a fail. Additional tests were undertaken and a 34-year-old man from Toronto was charged with Driving While Impaired, Over 80 mgs of Alcohol and Speeding.

Officers were dispatched to the area of a downtown drinking establishment where they met with Emergency Medical Services who were attending a call regarding an individual who was asleep behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. 

The driver was found passed out with the keys in the ignition; however, the vehicle was not running. 

The driver was taken to police headquarters where he registered a fail on the Intoxilyzer test. A 42-year-old man from Azilda was charged with Care or Control of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired.

An officer in a marked cruiser travelling on Young Street downtown saw a motor vehicle travelling the wrong way down a one-way street. The Officer initiated a traffic stop by turning on the cruiser lights and following the vehicle. 

The vehicle made a turn down Cedar Street, once again in the wrong direction before pulling into a parking lot. 

The officer asked the driver for his license and registration and the driver refused. The officer detected an odour of alcohol coming from the driver and administered a roadside screening test that registered a fail. 

Upon searching the individual, the officer also located marijuana. Additional breath tests were administered and a 19-year-old man from Azilda was charged with Driving While Impaired, Over 80 mgs of Alcohol, Possession of a Schedule II Substance, Fail to Surrender Permit, Fail to Surrender License and Drive Wrong Way.
