Sept. 26 marks the fifth annual awareness day for Cybertip.ca, Canada’s tipline for reporting the online sexual exploitation of children.

Cybertip.ca is operated by the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (Canadian Centre), which has launched a national campaign to raise awareness about the online sexual exploitation of children and to offer how tips to help protect children from sexual abuse.

Cybertip.ca says it receives an average of more than 3,300 reports per month.

A recent national study conducted by the Canadian Centre for Child Protection looked at nearly 152,000 reports of online exploitation, including 43,762 unique images and videos classified as child pornography. Nearly 80 per cent of the images assessed depicted very young children, under 12 years of age, Cybertip.ca said today.

Further, the organization said almost 70 per cent of these images appeared to have been taken within a home setting.

Greater Sudbury Police and Cybertip.ca encourage the public to report anything they find to the city police force, which works collaboratively with Cybertip.ca.

Reports can be made with Twitter, on http://www.facebook.com/sudburypoliceFacebook and on the GSPS website

“Citizens are encouraged to report these incidents directly to Greater Sudbury Police,” said Detective Sergeant Ramsay of the Greater Sudbury Police Cybercrime Unit. “It is through collaborative partnerships that we can ensure the enhanced safety, security and wellness of our community”

The Canadian Centre is encouraging parents and adult members of the community to visit Cybertip.ca to view the campaign and to engage in the conversation on social using the hashtag #ctipday2016.
