Chance encounter by Sudbury Police bike patrol leads to major drug bust

Officers on patrol on Elgin Street this week spotted a person with outstanding warrants and his arrest led officers to cache of drugs, cash, weapons and a bulletproof vest

A chance encounter on Elgin Street this week led Greater Sudbury Police Service to a major drug bust.

Just before 6 p.m. on Feb. 5, officers with the Community Response Unit (CRU) were on bike patrol downtown, GSPS said in a news release today, “when they located an individual who was wanted on multiple outstanding arrest warrants on Elgin Street.”

Police said they had information that the wanted man was armed with a firearm, so additional units were brought to the area to affect the arrest and at 6:10 p.m the man was taken into custody.

In searching the man, GSPS said officers found him in possession of $10,500 in cash, a knife and a loaded handgun. The man was also wearing a bulletproof vest, police said.

But it was upon searching the bag the man was carrying that officers turned up a goldmine of illegal substances, police allege.

“Incident to arrest, officers then searched the bag the individual was carrying at the time and located 573.4 grams of fentanyl,  234.1 grams of methamphetamine, 468.6 grams of cocaine, 237.6 grams of hashish oil and Oxycodone pills,” GSPS said in a news release. “The estimated street value of the drugs seized is $117,000.”

The 36-year-old man who was arrested at the scene is charged with:

  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Carrying a Concealed Weapon x3
  • Careless Use of Firearm
  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order x4
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Possession of Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking x3

The man had a Feb. 6 date in bail court.
