A stakeout on the opening day of moose hunting season has led to 153 charges being laid against 13 hunters and 35 other people from the Toronto area. One hunter had 31 moose tags.
On Oct. 8, Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers, acting on tips, staked out an area just off Beauparlant Road, in St. Charles.
Among the charges laid are illegally killing six adult moose and two white-tailed deer; illegal transfer and possession of game seals; allowing game to spoil; failing to attach the proper seal to a moose; having a loaded firearm on a motor vehicle and making a false statement.
The investigation is continuing and further charges are expected to be laid.
The moose tag draw system was implemented to ensure Ontario?s moose populations remain sustainable for future generations. Conservation officers enforce the laws and regulations that protect our natural resources from abuse and violators that intentionally take opportunities away from responsible and legally licensed hunters.
