A 44-year-old Chelmsford man was charged Jan. 18 with illegally modifying his snow machine.

The charge was laid by the OPP's North East Region Snow Machine, All Terrain Vehicle and Vessels Enforcement Unit (S.A.V.E.). The unit was patrolling the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) trail system in Espanola.

The man was charged with driving a vehicle with a component or device removed or modified, contrary to the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act.

Police explained to Sudbury.com the charge is related to modifying the exhaust system of the sled, which has the effect of making the machine louder.
