Updated: Police release names of two men who died in Hwy. 17 crash near Espanola Friday morning

The OPP have released the names of the two people who died in a crash on Highway 17 near Espanola Friday morning.

Zachary Duval, 23, of Espanola, died in the crash, as did Robert McGirr, 62, of North Bay.

The two-vehicle collision occurred at around 7:25 a.m. Nov. 27, approximately one kilometre west of Highway 6. Duval was driving the eastbound vehicle involved in the collision, while McGirr was driving the westbound vehicle.

A post-mortem is set to take place at Health Sciences North Dec. 1.

The investigation is ongoing under the direction of the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

Highway 17 has been reopened in both directions after this morning's fatal collision close to Espanola, according to the OPP.

Police say two people died as a result of the two-vehicle collision, which occurred at around 7:25 a.m. on Highway 17, about one kilometre west of the Highway 6 turnoff (the highway leading to Espanola and Manitoulin Island).

OPP Technical Collision Investigators (TCI) were called in to assist with the investigation, said the OPP. The investigation is ongoing and further information will be provided once available.

A crash on Highway 17 in the Espanola area Friday morning is fatal, the OPP have confirmed.

The OPP said the Espanola OPP responded to the crash at 8:45 a.m. this morning. It occurred approximately one kilometre west of Highway 6 (the highway connecting Hwy. 17 with Espanola and Manitoulin Island).

Highway 17 is expected to be closed for several hours while the OPP investigates this collision and motorists are asked to please obey the road closure signs, said the press release issued at 10:20 a.m. 

The investigation is continuing and further information will be provided once available, said police.

Highway 17 remains closed in both directions in the Espanola area at this hour, the OPP report on Twitter.

There has been a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 17, west of Highway 6.

Detours are in place, the OPP say.

A note for travellers this morning — the OPP reports that there has been a collision on Highway 17, west of Espanola. 

Vehicles are blocking the roadway, the OPP said in a tweet at 7:25 a.m. Friday morning.
