Updated: Driver facing multiple charges after morning collision on Highway 17

On Sept.8 at 6:55 a.m., members from the Nipissing West (Sudbury) Detachment of the OPP and Sudbury EMS responded to a collision involving two vehicles on Highway 17 at Long Lake Road.

Investigation revealed an eastbound car crossed the centre line and collided with a westbound tractor trailer.  

The driver and lone occupant of the car was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.   

As a result of the investigation, the driver of the car, a 77-year-old person from Sault Ste. Marie, was charged with:  

  • Careless Driving,
  • Drive While Under Suspension
  • Drive Motor Vehicle, No Currently Validated Permit
  • Owner Operate Motor Vehicle on a Highway - No Insurance

The highway was closed for approximately 3.5 hours while crews removed the vehicles and debris from the roadway.

Highway 17 was fully reopened as of 10:30 a.m., the OPP reported on Twitter.

The collision, which involves a tractor-trailer and a car, took place on Highway 17 on the overpass for Long Lake Road, not at Whitefish, as originally reported.

The OPP said on Twitter at 9:14 a.m. Tuesday a section of Highway 17 remains closed, although a tow truck is on scene.

There are detours via MR 55 at Whitefish and for local traffic at Southview Drive.
