Collision with moose claims life of Mattawa woman

Crash closed Highway 17 for six hours on July 30

North Bay OPP have provided information regarding a fatal collision on Highway 17 on July 30.

At 10:36 p.m. that night, officers were dispatched to a single motor vehicle crash on Highway 17 in Calvin Township, between Bonfield and Mattawa.

OPP, Nipissing Paramedic Services, Papineau Cameron Fire Department and Calvin Fire Department responded to what was discovered to be a collision with a moose.

“Three of the occupants were transported to the local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries by Nipissing Paramedic Services,” OPP said.

A fourth occupant of the vehicle was airlifted to hospital from the scene by ORNGE air ambulance with life-threatening injuries. She later succumbed to those injuries.

The deceased has been identified as Gail Gagne, 60, of Mattawa.

The highway was closed in both directions for about six hours following the crash, while members of the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement Team (T.I.M.E.) attended to process the scene.
