The fate of a veteran Sudbury police officer won?t be determined until the new year after the sentencing judge ordered a new pre-sentence report be prepared.

Const. Glenn Greenough, who was convicted of one count of assault following a trial that wrapped up in September, was scheduled to be sentenced Monday. However, Justice John Keast said the pre-sentence report was insufficient. He ordered a new one be prepared by a probation officer from outside the Sudbury area.

Greenough was convicted of assault for an incident where he got into an argument with his date, a female civilian employee with the local police service. The woman testified she and Greenough got into an argument and while she walked away from his vehicle, he picked her up, placed her over his shoulders, and tried to force her back inside the vehicle.

Greenough testified he was acting as a police officer because his date was intoxicated and he was trying to protect her from hurting herself, a defence Keast rejected.

Defence counsel Ted Conroy said Greenough was anxious to have this matter dealt with, but understood the judge?s concerns.

Conroy has asked the court to impose a conditional discharge, which would mean Greenough would have no criminal record.

Crown attorney Thom Fitzgerald has asked for a criminal conviction to be registered.
