Cops track down Sudbury man who fled on foot from stolen vehicle

A Sudbury man who allegedly stole a vehicle was caught by the OPP after he was spotted speeding on Highway 17 on March 12.

Shortly after 1 p.m. on the day in question, members from the East Algoma Detachment of the OPP responded to a theft of vehicle in downtown core of the town of Blind River.

The vehicle was observed travelling eastbound on Highway 17 at a high rate of speed. Shortly after a sighting of the motor vehicle, it was located having skidded across the westbound lane into a ditch, east of the junction of Highway 17 and Lauzon Village Road in Algoma Mills. 

A man and a woman then fled on foot in a brushed area along the highway.

Officers set up containment along Highway 17 and members of the OPP Emergency Response Team and the OPP Canine Unit began a track of the area and were successful in locating the two individuals shortly after 2:30 p.m. 

As a result of the investigation, a 27 year-old man from Sudbury was charged with:

  • Theft of a Motor Vehicle
  • Theft Under $5,000 from a Motor Vehicle
  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
  • Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order (two counts)

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail Court in Blind River on March 13 and was remanded into custody. 

A 22-year-old woman from Blind River was charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on May 3.

The Ontario Provincial Police said in a press release they would like to thank the public and members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) who went out of their way to assist with this investigation.
