Dangerous driver turns himself in

A 27-year-old man eventually turned himself into police headquarters after leading officers on a dangerous chase, crashing into a police cruiser and fleeing on foot, said Greater Sudbury Police Service.

On Nov. 5, officers observed a red Honda Civic travelling westbound at about 5:30 p.m. on The Kingsway near Barrydowne Road. He was driving at a high rate of speed.

An officer turned to follow the vehicle and it was seen travelling in the centre lane of The Kingsway.

The vehicle then turned onto Bancroft Drive and proceeded eastbound toward Bellevue. The vehicle passed traffic in the oncoming lanes, forcing other cars to swerve out of the way.

When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, it pulled into the parking lot of 1290 Bancroft Dr., where the driver struck the police cruiser in an attempt to evade police.

Police called off the chase and the suspect driver fled the area on foot.

While police were investigating the offence, the driver turned himself in.

He will appear in bail court on Nov. 6 and is charged with dangerous driving, flight from police and fail to remain under the Criminal Code, as well as operating a vehicle with no insurance.

Fortunately no one was injured in the incident. Both the police vehicle and the suspect’s vehicle received moderate damage.
