A “proud and beloved member of the Greater Sudbury Police Service” died Sunday after going into distress during a diving trip in the Moose Mountain area north of Capreol.

At around 11 a.m. June 24, recreational divers were diving in the quarry when one of the divers surfaced and appeared to be in distress.

The other divers pulled the man to shore and began life-saving measures until the paramedics arrived and took over.

Unfortunately, their efforts weren't successful, and Scott Champagne, 41, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Champagne had worked for Greater Sudbury Police at the Sudbury Court House since 2001. He was also a member of the police service's auxiliary unit. The man is survived by his wife and two children.

His death is under investigation by the Coroner's Office and Greater Sudbury Police's criminal investigation division. The incident is being considered a sudden death.

“On behalf of Scott’s extended family, our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends,” said a press release from the police service.
