Driver faces charges after crash at MR 55-Hwy. 17 intersection in Whitefish

A 19-year-old from St. Charles is facing careless driving charges after a crash at the intersection of HIghway 17 and Municipal Road 55 in Whitefish Tuesday afternoon.

The collision occurred at around 4:05 p.m. June 9.

An investigation by the OPP revealed a car with two occupants failed to stop and proceeded across the eastbound lanes on Highway 17 from Municipal Road 55, into the path of an eastbound commercial motor vehicle, which was unable to avoid the collision.

The driver and lone occupant of the commercial motor vehicle was not injured.  

The driver of the car suffered minor injuries and the 18-year-old passenger, from Lively, was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  

As a result of the investigation, the 19-year-old driver of the car, from St. Charles, was charged with:  

  • Careless Driving, contrary to section 130(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA); and
  • Disobey Stop Sign - Fail to Stop, contrary to section 136(1)(a) of the HTA.

The Ministry of Environment (MOE) attended the scene for clean-up of the fuel spill.  

The eastbound lanes of Highway 17 re-opened at 7:45 p.m.
