A man who went crashing through the ice while riding his ATV about 200 metres offshore from Maple Point in Billings Township has been identified as David Andrew Boyer, 28, from Aundeck Omni Kaaning First Nation.
At approximately 6:30 am, a resident of Maple Point was awakened by the Boyer's cries for help and called the fire and police departments.
A search and rescue helicopter from the United States Coast Guard was dispatched to help in the search. Despite the rescue efforts, Boyer had succumbed to the icy water and was pronounced dead by a coroner.
