Drug charges laid against two people after Highway 17 traffic stop

On May 24 at 2:50 p.m., members from the Nipissing West (Sudbury) Detachment of the OPP responded to three separate traffic complaints regarding a vehicle swerving all over the road, travelling westbound on Highway 17 near Sutcliffe Road, in the Municipality of Markstay-Warren.  

Officers subsequently located and stopped the vehicle on Highway 17, east of Markstay.  

Upon speaking with the driver, officers determined the individual was impaired and he was arrested. Officers seized a quantity of drugs suspected to be Fentanyl.   

As a result of the investigation, the driver, a 30-year-old man from Barrie was charged with:  

  • Operation While Impaired - Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Opioid (other than heroin)
  • Dangerous Operation
  • Driving Motor Vehicle with Liquor Readily Available

The passenger, a 28-year-old woman from Barrie was charged with possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking - opioid (other than heroin).

Both accused were released by way of an undertaking and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on July 22, in Sudbury.  

The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.  

This charge marks the 24th driver charged under Criminal Impaired Driving Laws in the Nipissing West Detachment area in 2020.
