The not-so-humorous saying ?one for the ditch? became reality last November for a Sudbury man who was sentenced to 20 days in jail and had his driver?s licence suspended for two years Monday.

Court heard Michael St. Amant, 22, was observed by Greater Sudbury Police in the parking lot outside a bar just before closing time last Nov. 8.

The pickup truck observed by police drove over a curb, made a sharp left and proceeded to drive into a ditch before coming lodged.

When police approached, St. Amant was alone behind the wheel.

He exhibited numerous signs of intoxication and was brought to police headquarters, where two breathalyser tests revealed he had 2.5 times the legal amount of alcohol in his system allowed in Canada to operate a motor vehicle.

St. Amant was charged in August 2000 with drunk driving. He had no previous criminal record.

Defence counsel Glenn Sandberg said his client was co-operative with police, pleaded guilty at an early date and knows he?s going to jail considering the high readings and the fact this was his second drunk driving conviction in two years.

Justice Guy Mahaffy agreed to the jail sentence and 24-month driving prohibition.
