A Chelmsford man who managed to drive between Toronto and Sudbury while severely intoxicated only to get into an accident near his Chelmsford home, was given a jail sentence Wednesday.

Justice Randall Lalande said he had difficulty accepting the joint submission that Joseph Nevins, who was convicted of his fourth drunk driving offence, should spend only 30 days in jail.

However, because the proposal called for a three-year driving prohibition, Lalande accepted it.

Court heard Nevins drank heavily after a day on the job in Toronto and decided to drive home to Sudbury while severely intoxicated.

He crashed his van into a truck parked near his Chelmsford home at the end of the trip.

Nevins left the scene of the accident, but the owner of the truck and his friend chased Nevins and brought him back to
the scene to wait for police to arrive.

Breathalyser tests showed Nevins had well over three times the legal amount of alcohol allowed in Canada to operate a motor vehicle.
