Update: One driver killed, another injured Sunday in head-on Hwy. 17 crash

Hwy 17 near Kukami Lake Road will be closed for several hours due to a fatal motor vehicle collision (File).

The driver of one vehicle died at the scene while the other was transported to hospital with serious injuries after a head-on crash on Highway 17 Sunday afternoon.

Emergency services responded to the crash, which occurred on Highway 17 between Wahnapitae and Markstay west of Kukagami Lake Road, at around 3:22 p.m. Dec. 16, said a press release from the Sudbury OPP.

The name of the deceased is not being released at this time pending the notification of next of kin, police said.

The highway was closed for around five hours, reopening Sunday night.

The police investigation is ongoing.

Highway 17 between Wahnapitae and Markstay has been fully reopened following a fatal collision earlier today. 

No information concerning the crash has been released by police at this time.

At approximately 4:45 p.m this evening,  Sudbury OPP reported there was a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 near Kukagami Lake Road, between Markstay and Wahnapitae. 

OPP North East informed the public through Twitter, that the highway will be closed for several hours as a result of the accident. 

Motorists may detour this route via Hwy 537 in Wahnapitae and Hwy 535 through Hagar. 

There is no word yet on the number of vehicles or people involved.
