Victims of crime can now apply for financial assistance to attend the National Parole Board (NPB) hearing of the offender who wronged them.

The federal assistance program will apply towards all NPB cases starting Nov. 1. A new national office has been established within the department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness to better serve victims of crime.

The program was backed in Ottawa by Nickel Belt MP Ray Bonin.

"After years of lobbying, I am pleased to see this initiative that will finally give victims of crime a voice and an advocate in our correctional system," he said, in a press release.

Victims can contact the new office by calling 1-866-525-0554.
