Fentanyl worth $30K seized at RIDE check stop

Odor of cannabis leads to two southern Ontario men being arrested in Espanola, vehicle search turns up illegal drugs and cash

Ontario Provincial Police report that two Southern Ontario men were arrested and roughly $30,000 worth of suspected fentanyl was seized after a vehicle was stopped at a Reduced Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check on March 10.

Ontario Provincial Police report that two Southern Ontario men were arrested and roughly $30,000 worth of suspected fentanyl was seized after a vehicle was stopped at a Reduced Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check Monday night.

On March 10 at approximately 11 p.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a RIDE check on Highway 6 near Foucault Drive in Espanola, said the OPP news release.

A vehicle came through the RIDE check, and officers detected an odour of cannabis emanating from the vehicle. Further investigation on scene resulted in the driver and passenger being arrested, said the release.

Police said as a result of the stop, officers discovered a quantity of a substance believed to be fentanyl with an estimated street value of $30,000. The suspects also had about $2,500 in Canadian currency, said the release.

As a result, the driver, aged 30, from Etobicoke, was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - opioid
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Drive vehicle with cannabis readily available

The passenger, a 22-year-old man from Etobicoke, was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - opioid
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000

Both accused remain in custody and were scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Sudbury on March 11.
