Fire service deems Howey Drive fire suspicious

Elderly homeowner escaped without injury thanks to the intervention of bystanders

A house fire at the corner of Howey Drive and Van Horne Street called in around 5 p.m. Tuesday evening has been deemed suspicious by Greater Sudbury Fire Services.

The woman who lives in the home was able to escape without injury, apparently thanks to the intervention of bystanders. Firefighters responded quickly and were able to extinguish the fire.

Greater Sudbury Police and the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal were contacted to conduct a joint investigation.

Police ask anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area leading up to the time of the fire to report it.
