Greater Sudbury Police and the Ontario Fire Marshall are investigating a June 24 fire on The Kingsway that occurred in the same abandoned building where a body was found on June 22.

A police cruiser remained parked outside the building this morning and the area was cordoned off with yellow tape.

Greater Sudbury Police closed The Kingsway at 2:34 a.m. this morning to give firefighters space to fight the fire. The road was reopened by 4:54 a.m.

About an hour later, GSPS spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn said Greater Sudbury Fire Services contacted police about the fire, which she confirmed to Sudbury.com had occurred in the same building where a body was found on June 22.

“The fire has been deemed suspicious as the building is an abandoned residence,” Dunn said. “The Ontario Fire Marshall has been contacted and uniform officers are currently holding the scene. The suspicious fire reported on June 24 is at the same location as the sudden death investigation that was reported on June 22.”

On Tuesday, police were called to the same abandoned structure after receiving a report of a sudden death. The body of a 40-year-old man was discovered in the building.

The Coroner’s Office is conducting a post-mortem exam to determine the cause of death.

Meanwhile, detectives from the GSPS Criminal Investigations Division are working in collaboration with the Ontario Fire Marshal throughout the investigation, which is ongoing. Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact GSPS at 705-675-9171.
