First Nations to slow traffic near North Bay

Nipissing and Dokis First Nation members will slow traffic on Highway 17 near North Bay today between Christine Lane and the Oasis Trailer Park in Commanda Township, said the Ontario Provincial Police.

The bands are organizing an education campaign by handing out information pamphlets in support of the Idle No More campaign. The rally starts at 9 a.m. and will last until 6 p.m.

The OPP recognizes the Charter rights of everyone to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Officers will work with all parties to ensure public and officer safety and to maintain orderly conduct and peace.

The OPP said it has no role to play in the resolution of the underlying issues.

The OPP is working with those involved to minimize the impact on the travelling public and to ensure order and public safety.

The OPP said its objective in policing any road closures or blockade is to work to restore the orderly flow of traffic in the safest manner possible.
