G1 driver clocked at more than 170 km/h on MR 55

The Nipissing West OPP stopped a G1 driver who was travelling at more than 170 kilometres per hour on Municipal Road 55 on March 18.

The Nipissing West OPP report they stopped a G1 driver they allege was travelling at more than 170 kilometres per hour on Municipal Road 55 on March 18.

Police say that they conducted the traffic stop at 3:23 a.m. 

The portion of Municipal Road 55 where the driver was stopped has a posted speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour, meaning the driver was travelling more than 90 kilometres per hour over the speed limit.

The driver held a G1 driver's licence and was accompanied with a passenger holding a G2 driver's licence, who had consumed alcohol.

As a result of the investigation, the 25-year-old from Espanola was charged with: 

  • Drive motor vehicle - perform stunt - excessive speed
  • Class G1 licence holder - accompanying driver blood alcohol concentration .05 or above
  • Class G1 licence holder - unaccompanied by qualified driver

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice May 2 in Sudbury.

The driver was also issued a 30-day driver's licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days.
