Garson men accused of assaulting conservation officer

Three men from Garson were arrested and charged after they allegedly assaulted a conservation officer on April 3. At around 2:40 p.m.

Three men from Garson were arrested and charged after they allegedly assaulted a conservation officer on April 3.

At around 2:40 p.m. on April 3, the officer was conducting compliance checks on fisherman on George Alaska Lake in Moncrieff Township, north of Sudbury.

Investigation revealed that an individual was in possession of an illegal fish caught out of season.

The men packed their things and returned to their vehicle but came back a short time later and allegedly assaulted the officer, but did not cause any injuries.

According to OPP reports, the men then took the officer's ticket book and snowmobile and fled the area in a pickup truck.,

At around 3:20 p.m. OPP officers located the vehicle travelling southbound on Highway 144 and pulled them over.

As a result of the investigation, three of the men were arrested and charged and a fourth was released unconditionally.

A 45-year-old man, a 42-year-old man, and a 19-year-old man, all from Garson have each been charged with the following:
 

  • Assault a peace officer, contrary to the Criminal Code  
  • Obstruct peace officer, contrary to the Criminal Code  
  • Theft under $5,000, contrary to the Criminal Code – two counts  
  • Theft under $5,000, contrary to the Criminal Code – two counts  
  • Catch by angling and retaining fish during closed season, contrary to the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act  


The three accused will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury, on May 11 to answer to their charges.
