One man was sent to hospital with burns on his hands after a grease fire gutted his second-storey apartment Sunday night.

Chris Couriere, 21, started a grease fire and burned his hands severely while his roommate, Michael Gagne, was out walking his dog sometime before 11 pm Sunday.

Greater Sudbury Fire Services responded to the call at 10:46 pm.

The 75-year-old building on the corner of Frood Road and Fir Lane suffered about $100,000 in damages from the fire, which was contained within the apartment.

Smoke and water damage was incurred in other parts of the building as well.

Gagne, who had lived in the apartment for six years, lost all of his possessions in the blaze. He had no insurance.
