Updated: Greater Sudbury man charged with armed robbery

Suspect arrested minutes after exiting the store

A 35-year-old Greater Sudbury man was arrested on May 3, following the robbery of a convenience store on Notre Dame Avenue in Sudbury. 

The suspect entered the store around 11 a.m. that morning and began arguing with the employee at the counter, said Greater Sudbury Police in a press release.

It was at this point that the man pulled what was believed to be a gun from the waistband of his pants and pointed it at the employee, demanding cigarettes. 

The man then exited the store with a package of cigarettes, without injuring the employee.

Officers arrived on-scene as the man was leaving the store's parking lot and after conducting a search, found him to be in possession of a black pellet gun and package of cigarettes. 

As a result of the incident, the suspect was arrested and charged with the following:

  • robbery using a firearm
  • possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • imitation firearm - use while committing an offence
  • carrying a concealed weapon
  • pointing a firearm

A resident of Greater Sudbury has been arrested and taken into custody, following the robbery of a convenience store on Notre Dame Avenue earlier that day. 

Around 11:01 a.m. on Sunday, Greater Sudbury Police received a report that a man had presented a firearm to a store clerk, demanding cigarettes.

Officers responded shortly thereafter, where they were able to arrest the 35-year-old suspect while still in the store’s parking lot, said Staff Sgt. Sherry Young in an interview with Sudbury.com.

There were no injuries reported in relation to the incident, to the clerk, suspect or any patrons that may have been in the surrounding area. 

This is believed to be an isolated incident, accompanying no apparent threat to public safety. 

A full list of charges associated with this event will be released once police have concluded their investigation. 

The suspect remains in custody, scheduled to appear in video bail court Monday morning.
