GSPS Festive RIDE has checked nearly 730 more vehicles than last year

Charges and suspension numbers up after a month of roadside checks

Greater Sudbury Police Service officers, including members of the Traffic Management Unit have conducted six RIDE spot-checks (two with assistance from the OPP) at various locations throughout the City of Greater Sudbury during the Festive RIDE campaign.

Spot checks were conducted between Nov. 14 and Dec. 12. Check-points occurred during the day and at night in order to ensure maximum exposure during the festive holiday season.

Officers conducted 44 roadside screenings, up from 27 in 2017. Seven three-day licence suspensions have been issued so far this year, up from two a year ago. Overall, police have charged 13 people during this RIDE campaign, again, up from 2017 when there were 11 charges laid in the same time frame.

Six of the seven people charged for driving while impaired, and one was charged for being impaired by drugs. One person was ticketed for cannabis-related charges.

In total, GSPS stopped 3,242 vehicles so far this year, compared to 2,513 in 2017.
