Handgun seized during Highway 6 traffic stop

Three passengers in their 20s, all from Brampton, facing numerous charges

An evening traffic stop for a damaged vehicle led to the arrests of three people and the seizure of a handgun, Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release today.

The incident occurred Dec. 7 on Highway 6 in the township of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands (NEMI) at around 8 p.m.

“The Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a traffic complaint about a damaged vehicle hitting the shoulder on Highway 6 in the NEMI Township,” OPP said in a Dec. 17 news release. 

After conducting a traffic stop and searching the vehicle, police said officers turned up a handgun, ammunition and Canadian currency. All three occupants of the vehicle face charges related to the prohibited firearm and other charges.

The 26-year-old driver from Brampton is charged with:

  • Carrying concealed weapon
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Possession of prohibited firearm with ammunition
  • Possession of a prohibited ammunition
  • Transport firearm in a careless manner
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Fail to report accident
  • Fail to remain
  • Drive vehicle with cannabis readily available
  • Operate unsafe vehicle

A 25-year-old passenger, also from Brampton, passenger, is charged with:

  • Carrying concealed weapon
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm
  • Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Transport firearm or ammunition in a careless manner
  • Possession of prohibited firearm with ammunition
  • Possession of prohibited ammunition
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000

A 21-year-old passenger is charged with:

  • Carrying concealed weapon
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm
  • Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Transport firearm or ammunition in a careless manner
  • Possession of prohibited firearm with ammunition
  • Possession of prohibited ammunition
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000

All three accused were held in custody and appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Sudbury on Dec. 8.
