Two young thugs who played a lead role in the beating of a senior at an area truck stop in May have been given lengthy jail terms.

Eric Bruneau, 22, and Tyler Rawcliffe, 19, both pleaded guilty to numerous charges Wednesday, including robbery, aggravated assault and possession of stolen property.

Bruneau and Rawcliffe, along with a 16-year-old male young offender from Dowling, and two female young offenders, ages 15 and 16, one from Sudbury and one from Val Caron, were all charged following a serious incident the afternoon of May 22.

Justice Yvon Renaud sentenced Rawcliffe to a penitentiary term of 31 months, while Bruneau received a sentence of 23.5 months. The sentences will run on top of 80 days both young men have spent in custody since their arrest.

A 73-year-old Sudbury senior was attacked after he had driven his vehicle to a rest stop location at the corner of Highway 17 E. and the Garson-Coniston Road.

All five assailants were waiting at the rest stop and inside the building, the senior was confronted and assaulted with a hammer, say police. Following the vicious beating, the senior was robbed of personal belongings, including his car keys.
