Update: OPP release more details on Hwy. 69 crash; GSPS officer killed

Greater Sudbury Police say one of their officers was killed in a crash Thursday

The West Parry Sound OPP have released a few more details about a fatal collision that occurred on Highway 69 six kilometres south of the French River at around 12:39 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

As previously reported, the collision involved a pickup truck and a fuel tanker truck.

The driver of the southbound pickup truck, who was killed in the crash, is a 37-year-old from Sudbury. Greater Sudbury Police say it was one of their officers who was the person killed in the collision.

The 59-year-old driver of the northbound fuel tanker truck, who is from Rayside-Balfour, was transported to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

A post-mortem examination is expected to occur Friday. Further information will be released as it becomes available.

Highway 69 was closed for around 10 hours while the OPP investigated the collision.

Updated: July 4, 10:08 p.m.: Parry Sound OPP have reopened Highway 69 south of French River following a fatal collision earlier today. 

Police tweeted the update just after 10 p.m. this evening. No other details were released.

Northeast Region OPP are still investigating a fatal collision that occurred on Highway 69 south of French River at around 12:55 p.m. on July 4.

According to OPP Northeast acting sergeant Shona Camirand, a diesel tanker and a pickup truck collided and the driver of the pickup truck was killed.

A fire started on the tanker as a result of the collision and the air was filled with black smoke.

"I spoke with West Parry Sound OPP and they have confirmed that the fire was put out," said Camirand.

"The road is expected to be closed for several hours as officers are still investigating."

The OPP have not released the identity of the deceased and have not said whether or not any charges have been laid.

If you are headed north you can detour at Highway 124, if you are headed south you can detour at Highway 64.

A serious collision on Highway 69 south of French River has closed the roadway.

The Ontario Provincial Police tweeted the road will remain closed until investigators and emergecy crews finish their work.

"Highway is closed between Highway 124 and Highway 64 following serious collision with one fatality," police tweeted.
