Human remains found in Elliot Lake identified as missing man Joseph Topping

Investigation continues to identify cause of death

East Algoma OPP crime unit North East Region Forensic Identification Services (FIS), have identified the human remains found in Elliot Lake to belong to Joseph Topping. (ElliotLakeToday.ca) 

East Algoma OPP officers have confirmed that human remains found in Elliot Lake on Feb. 14 belong to missing 31-year-old Joseph Topping. 

Topping was reported missing from Elliot Lake on Jan. 8.

The search for him involved the use of a canine unit, a drone and ground searchers, OPP said in a news release. Search efforts focused on a wooded area off Mississauga Avenue in Elliot Lake.

Topping's body was transported to the Office of the Chief Coroner-Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS) in Sault Ste. Marie, where a postmortem examination confirmed his identity.

The East Algoma OPP Crime Unit and the North East Region Forensic Identification Service continue to investigate to determine the cause of death.

No additional information has been released to allow for a thorough investigation.
