The man Justice Guy Mahaffy called ?completely out of control? because it took four police officers to subdue him following a routine traffic incident has been given the equivalent of a nine-month jail sentence.

Hasslam Robinson, 46, was found guilty late last year of assaulting police, resisting arrest and assaulting the mother of two of his children. He was also found guilty of two offences under the Highway Traffic Act.

Three officers testified at the trial Robinson was livid with police after he was stopped while trying to dig his car out of a snowbank back in February 2003.

One officer accused Robinson of being responsible for colliding with another vehicle because he was spying on his girlfriend.

Robinson was found guilty of grabbing and throwing his former girlfriend following an argument, causing injuries to her upper torso.

Robinson has spent four months in pre-trial custody on this matter. Mahaffy applied the traditional two-for-one for time spent in pre-trial custody and said another 30 days in jail was appropriate.

Robinson was also fined $800 for the Highway Traffic Act offences. He was arrested in early January on other charges which have yet to be heard.

Robinson has filed a civil lawsuit against the officers involved that night and Greater Sudbury Police Service, alleging they used excessive force. It?s not believed that lawsuit will proceed following the guilty verdicts and sentence.
