Lockerby Composite School students will act as lawyers in a mock criminal trial to be presided over by Justice Patricia Hennessy of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice today at the Sudbury courthouse.

Thanks to the Sudbury legal community, a real judge and acting Crown attorneys and defence lawyers will assist the students in this educational and fun event, says teacher Shari Blasutti.

Lawyers will act as assistants while students run trials. After two mock trials, the presiding judge will retire to consider the evidence before returning to deliver a verdict.

The mock trial is part of an effort by the legal community to increase awareness of the legal system among young people. For the last two years, lawyers have been visiting local classrooms.
