A 25-year-old Lively man who allegedly drove while under the influence of alcohol and then crashed his car on Highway 17 near Sudbury Thursday night is facing charges.

The Nipissing West Detachment of the OPP responded to the single-vehicle collision on Highway 17 at around 9:20 p.m. Feb. 6.

While speaking with the driver, officers detected the odour of alcohol coming from his breath.

The driver failed an alcohol breath screening test, and was arrested and transported to the Sudbury OPP detachment for further alcohol screening.

The suspect was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC.

He was also issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The man is scheduled to appear in court in Sudbury March 4.

The OPP say this is the seventh impaired driver charged in the Nipissing West Detachment area in 2020.

“The OPP remind motorists that no amount of alcohol or drug is safe to consume and then drive,” said a press release.

“Report impaired drivers. Should you observe a suspected impaired driver, please dial 911 or contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122.”
