Long list of charges after driver caught with cannabis, fake handgun

A collision on Highway 17 turned out to be bad luck for a driver police had been trying to find on Saturday.

On June 13 at 9:10 p.m., Sudbury OPP report receiving a traffic complaint of a possible impaired driver in the area of Fielding Road. Unfortunately, police said they were unable to locate the vehicle.

Then, a few hours later, Sudbury OPP officers were investigating a crash on Highway 17 that closed the westbound lane near the Vermillion River Bridge at approximately 12:50 a.m. on June 14. 

Among the vehicles that were stopped by the accident was one vehicle in particular — the vehicle police said they had been searching for earlier that evening.

“Upon speaking with the driver, officers determined the individual was under the influence of a drug and he was arrested,” police said.

Officers reported seizing a quantity of drugs suspected to be cannabis from the vehicle, along with a replica handgun.

Now, a 21-year-old M’Chigeeng First Nation resident faces a slew of charges as a result of the arrest.

Charges include impaired operation (blood drug concentration), impaired operation, operating a vehicle with cannabis readily available, failing to surrender a permit for a motor vehicle, failing to surrender a driving licence, failing to surrender an insurance card and driving at an unlawful hour with a Class G1 licence. 

The accused was released by way of an Appearance Notice and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Aug. 12 in Sudbury.  

He was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
