A Sudbury man is facing several weapons charges after police were called to a Manitoulin Island residence in the middle of the night on Saturday.

Just after 1 a.m. on Nov. 24, the Manitoulin OPP were called to a home on Highway 542 in Campbell Township after receiving reports of a man shooting a firearm from a residence.

The situation escalated, it seems from the police report, to the point the OPP had to call in it Tactic and Response Unit, Emergency Response Unit, Canine Unit, Unmanned Aerial Support Unit (drone), crisis negotiators and the Critical Incident Command unit.

Eventually, the man was apprehended without incident. Several firearms were seized in the process.

As the result of the investigation, a 49-year-old man from Sudbury, who police have not named, was charged with careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition; possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; and careless storage of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Sudbury on Sunday.
