Greater Sudbury Police made pair of arrests late Thursday night while conducting focused patrols to address the ongoing issues of theft from motor vehicles, property thefts and break and enters in specific residential areas.
Based on crime analytics, the officers focused on areas that had been identified as having a high volume of theft from motor vehicles and residential break and enters.
The focused patrols were done during a night shift as the crime analytics indicated that the majority of these crimes take place overnight.
Although patrol operations routinely conduct focused patrols in marked cruisers, unmarked cruisers allow officers to discreetly observe and locate suspects.
Just before 10:30 p.m. on May 14, officers saw a man riding a bicycle into a laneway behind Cedar Street in the downtown. The man approached a group of individuals who were gathered in the laneway.
The officers then saw the man make hand-to-hand drug for money transactions with individuals in the laneway forming reasonable grounds for his arrest.
Shortly after 10:30 p.m. the officers entered the laneway on foot and arrested the 30-year-old man. Upon searching the man, the officers located methamphetamine pills and fentanyl, as well as cash.
The man was charged with two counts of trafficking a schedule I substance and possession of property obtained by crime. He was released on an undertaking.
Officers then proceeded to the area of Kingsway and Second Avenue after reports of a man being seen trying to enter vehicles in various parking lots.
The two officers in two unmarked vehicles parked in the area after seeing the man in the parking lot. The man was arrested after he tried to enter the unmarked cruiser with one of the officers inside.
The 25-year-old man was charged with various offences including two counts of theft Under $5,000, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime and possession of a schedule I substance after the officers located methamphetamine and fentanyl on him during their search. He was released on an undertaking.
Members of the Central Community Response Unit with the assistance of Patrol Operations will continue to conduct focused patrols in various areas of Greater Sudbury based on crime analytics.

"If you have experienced a residential break and enter, please report it by calling us at 705-675-9171. We would also like to remind community members to ensure your vehicles, garages, sheds and homes are locked and secured when you are not around."
