Man arrested following apartment fire on Barrydowne Road

A Sudbury man was arrested Friday and remains in police custody facing numerous charges in relation to a residential fire that occurred that morning on Barry Downe Road. 

On Jan. 3 around 11:15 a.m., Greater Sudbury Fire Services, Greater Sudbury Police and Sudbury Emergency Medical Services responded to reports of a fire at an apartment complex in New Sudbury. 

The fire was contained in less than an hour. 

The initial assessment of the property estimates the total damage to be around $20,000. 

Further investigation revealed a 40-year-old resident of the building to be related to the incident.

The suspect was transported to Health Sciences North with minor injuries as a result of the fire and later moved to police headquarters once he was cleared from the hospital's care. 

There were no other injuries reported as a result of the incident, aside from the suspect himself. 

He has been charged with the following:

  • Arson, disregard for human life
  • Production, under the cannabis act
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking 
  • Possession of the proceeds of crime

The suspect is scheduled to appear in Sudbury bail court Jan. 4. 

The scene of the incident has been secured by police, who will be continuing their investigation with the help of the Ontario Fire Marshalls Office.
