A Wiikwemkoong resident is facing numerous charges after allegedly waving a firearm around on Highway 17 in West Nipissing on March 19.
At around 12:45 p.m. that day, Nipissing West Ontario Provincial Police were dispatched to the scene on the highway for a report of a man “brandishing a firearm.”
Police located the man and arrested him at gunpoint, seizing two airguns in the process. OPP said the man had sustained an unspecified injury sometime prior to the officers’ arrival and he was transported to hospital by ambulance.
The 34-year-old resident of Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory is charged with:
- Pointing a firearm
- Imitation firearm - use while committing offence
- Carrying concealed weapon
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
- Failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court - two counts
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of weapon
- Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order
The man was held for bail court and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on March 20.
