A Sudbury man who allegedly stole a vehicle from a dealership using a confidence trick back in October is facing new charges.

Mark Lucas, 59, was arrested in late November by the OPP in relation to other matters. Monday morning, as he was being remanded into custody at Sudbury Jail by the OPP, he was arrested and charged by a court officer on charges related to the October vehicle theft.

He has been remanded into custody pending a Dec. 10 court date.

On Oct. 29, Lucas was arrested and charged by GSPS for allegedly stealing a vehicle from a local car dealership.

Police said Lucas entered a dealership on The Kingsway Oct. 2, looking to test drive a vehicle. A dealership employee told GSPS the man was given the key to a vehicle in the parking lot in order to take the vehicle for a test drive.

The vehicle was blocked in by another vehicle in the lot, and when the employee returned to check on Lucas, he had left and the employee found what was believed to be the key inside the vehicle.

Later that same day, police allege Lucas returned and stole the vehicle, as the key he had left behind was nearly identical, however, not the actual key to the vehicle.

The week before his October arrest in Sudbury, the missing vehicle Lucas is alleged to have stolen was involved in a pursuit in another jurisdiction. Police believe Lucas was the driver. Officers later recovered the unoccupied stolen vehicle.

Lucas faces charges of theft of a motor vehicle, theft under $5,000, trafficking property obtained by crime, fraud over $5,000 and driving while disqualified. He also faces a charge from 2019 in relation to possession of stolen property.

Sudbury.com is trying to determine the reason for Lucas’ arrest by OPP in November.
