A 32-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following a violent incident on Dublin Street during the early morning hours of Saturday.

Greater Sudbury Police Service members were called to the scene at approximately 2 a.m. when they were told that a man had run out of a residence screaming that someone was hurt and that an ambulance was required.

Prior to this, the caller reported seeing another man, this one with a slim build, fleeing from the residence.

Upon arriving at the scene minutes later, police report finding a 39-year-old woman at the bottom of the stairs inside the residence in critical condition. She was taken to Health Sciences North with life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital in serious but stable condition.

At approximately 2:19 a.m., multiple residents on Lasalle Boulevard phoned police to inform them that an unknown man, covered in blood, was banging on windows and doors and smashing windows along his way.

During this disturbance, a 68-year-old man was reportedly assaulted by the man and sustained minor injuries.

The suspect, in a “state of psychosis” according to police, was located in the parking lot of an establishment on Lasalle Boulevard at 2:26 a.m. and transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

The Dublin Street residence was searched, resulting in the seizure of two stun batons, ammunition, various knives and 48 marijuana plants. The plants resulted in the man facing a Cannabis Act charge related to growing more than four plants.

The suspect has been remanded into custody to appear in court on Oct. 20. Police are not releasing his name to protect the identity of the injured party.
