A Sudbury man who broke into the apartment of his blind female friend two days after being released from jail after serving a long jail term for assaulting her, was sentenced to 45 days in jail Thursday on top of 45 days he?s already spent behind bars since his arrest.

Court heard Michael Sarsfield, 49, had served seven months in pre-trial custody on charges of assault causing bodily harm for beating up the blind woman.

After pleading guilty, he was given a three-year probationary term to stay away from her.

Less than 48 hours after his release, Sarsfield showed up at the woman?s apartment, but fled after she warned her neighbour was going to call police. Sarsfield was apprehended by police and has been in jail since late June. He pleaded guilty Thursday to breaching his probation.

Defence counsel Natalie Boivin said Sarsfield was badly beaten in 1997 and suffered a serious head injury, which has greatly contributed to his many problems with the law the past five years.
