Man steals vehicle, assaults another man, flees from police

A 51-year-old Sudbury man is facing a long list of charges after he stole a vehicle from a Riverside Drive residence in the early hours of Dec. 3.

On Sunday, Dec. 3 at around 4 a.m. a vehicle was stolen from a residence on Riverside Drive. The 51-year-old man who stole the vehicle proceeded to drive to an apartment complex on Ramsey View Court where he was involved in an altercation with another man. 

He then got back into the vehicle and drove it into the building causing damage to a door.

The man left in the stolen vehicle driving erratically and dangerously, striking other vehicles in the parking lot. Police were called regarding the stolen vehicle and the altercation that had taken place. 

Officers saw the vehicle at the intersection of Beech Street and Frood Road, where they attempted to conduct a traffic stop. 

The man drove away from officers, running a red light, driving over a cement median and causing additional responding officers to take evasive actions to avoid a collision. The man then exited the vehicle on Jean Street and fled from police on foot.

A track for the man was conducted by Constable Major and K-9 Recon with the assistance of uniform patrol officers. The man was found hiding under a porch at a residence on Antwerp Avenue.

At around 5:45 a.m. the 51-year-old man from Greater Sudbury was arrested and charged with the following offences:

  • Theft of Motor Vehicle
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
  • Fail to Stop at the Scene of an Accident
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle x2
  • Flight While Pursued by a Peace Officer
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Assault
  • Assault with a Weapon x2
  • Mischief Under $5,000 x2
  • Impaired Driving
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order
  • Driving While Disqualified
