A man who pleaded guilty to breaking into a New Sudbury pharmacy to steal a large amount of prescription drugs while out on bail for possessing other stolen property was released Tuesday after serving the equivalent of 12 months behind bars.

Court heard William Dewar, 23, was caught by police on routine patrol after he broke into a grocery store pharmacy and stole hundreds of prescription pills. The street value of the stolen drugs was $2,500.

Police searched his car two days later and found other hard street drugs.

Six months before that, Dewar was charged and pleaded guilty to possessing two laptop computers, clothing, stamps and a small amount of cannabis. The laptop computers were stolen during a break and enter of a Canada Post outlet.

Defence counsel Andrew Buttazzoni told the court Dewar is single, had worked for the same company for five years and surrendered himself when he realized police were looking for him.

Dewar has served six months during his first stint behind bars and the court should adhere to case law which in most cases allows credit for two days time served for every day spent in pre-trial custody, said Buttazzoni.

Dewar plans on going straight, heading back to school and re-entering the workforce, he said.
