Man wanted since January arrested with cache of guns, drugs

Assault rifle, handgun and various illegal drugs seized, two others arrested as well

A man who Greater Sudbury Police have been searching for since January is finally in custody after police raided a South End establishment on Friday.

On Feb. 19, GSPS said it received a tip on the whereabouts of 24-year-old Jayson Wright in the South End of the city. 

Detectives obtained a Warrant to Enter, a Controlled  Drugs and Substances Act Search Warrant and a Criminal Code of Canada Search Warrant due to what police believed was the presence of illicit drugs and firearms at the location.

Shortly after 12:00 a.m. on Feb. 20, the GSPS Emergency Response Unit executed the warrants and took Wright into custody. A 27-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man were also arrested.

Police say they believe the 19-year-old was involved in the original incident, a Jan. 24 robbery at a Regent Street motel, and was also wanted on two outstanding arrest warrants. 

GSPS said a large cache of drugs, weapons and cash was seized, including: 

  • Assault rifle 
  • Hand gun 
  • Laser sight for firearm 
  • Multiple rounds of ammunition 
  • Flip knife 
  • Body armour 
  • Multiple cell phones (believed to be stolen) 
  • $4,250.00 in Cash (believed to be proceeds of crime) 
  • Over 18 grams of Cocaine 
  • Over 208 grams of Crystal Methamphetamine 
  • 610 Methamphetamine tablets 
  • 258 Xanax pills 
  • 268 doses of LSD 
  • Drug packing items, vacuum sealer and digital scale 

Wright has been charged with the following:  

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking x3 
  • Possession of Firearm Knowing its Unauthorized 
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose x2 
  • Possession of a Restricted Firearm with Ammunition  
  • Possession of a Firearm/Weapon Contrary to a Prohibition Order x2 
  • Fail to Comply with Release Order x2 
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime 

The 19-year-old and the 27-year-old both face the following charges:

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking x3 
  • Possession of Firearm Knowing its Unauthorized x2 
  • Unauthorized Possession of Firearm x2 
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose x2 
  • Possession of a Restricted Firearm with Ammunition  
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime 
  • Possession of a Prohibited Device 

Wright was sought in relation to a Jan. 24 robbery at a motel on Regent Street.

GSPS report they received a call just before midnight on Jan. 24 regarding a robbery that had taken place at the unnamed motel. Information provided was that the caller had attended the motel with another man and when they entered one of the rooms, the man hit him with a gun and then stole his cellphone, as well as, a few thousand dollars in cash.

Officers immediately arrived on scene and set up containment of the area. Officers saw two individuals exit the room. Both individuals were taken into custody. 

Information was provided that a third individual was still inside the room. Officers knocked on the door and identified themselves as police. The third individual exited the room and was taken into custody without incident. 

None of the three parties taken into custody were responsible for the original attack.

Through the investigation, it was determined that there were numerous firearms and other illegal weapons inside the room. The scene was secured by officers while detectives in the Criminal Investigation Division applied for and were granted a search warrant.

On Jan. 25, detectives in the Major Crimes section with the assistance of members of the Integrated Crime Team (I.C.T.) and Emergency Response Unit conducted the search warrant.

The following weapons were seized as a result of the search warrant:

  • A Rifle with a semi-automatic function
  • Two loaded magazines
  • Various calibre ammunition
  • Bear mace
  • Multiple knives

While conducting the search warrant, detectives located a substantial amount of illicit drugs in the room. In order to ensure the integrity of the investigation, officers once again secured the room and detectives applied for and were granted a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant.

On Jan. 26, Detectives from the Major Crimes Section and I.C.T. executed the CDSA search warrant of the room. 

As a result, the following drugs were seized:

  • 7,400 Xanax pills
  • 35 grams of Fentanyl
  • 185 grams of Cannabis
  • Over 17 grams of Cocaine
  • 48 Methamphetamine pills
  • Over 14 grams of Crystal Methamphetamine
  • Over 52 grams of Hash
  • 50 hits of LSD

The value of the drugs seized is over $56,700. In addition, detectives seized close to $500 in cash.

During the search warrants, detectives also seized over $25,000 worth of property that is believed to be stolen including cell phones, laptops, tablets, video game consoles, jewelry, power tools, tools and gift cards.
