A Sudbury doctor accused of sexually assaulting three female patients several years ago will appear in court in June for the beginning of a preliminary hearing.

The hearing will be held June 21-24 at the Sudbury courthouse. A judge will determine at the preliminary hearing if there?s sufficient evidence for the charges to proceed to trial.

Dr. Richard Nanka-Bruce, 59, was charged last summer with three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. He stands accused of assaulting three women in separate incidents between 1978 and 1990.

Nanka-Bruce was released on bail after charges were filed last September. One of the conditions of his bail order was a restriction on his contact with female patients.

The bail order specified he not conduct any counselling, assessment or procedures on female patients unless accompanied by a female nurse.

Criminal charges were filed after the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons took punitive action against Nanka-Bruce after he admitted to three acts of professional misconduct involving female patients.

The college placed restrictions on Nanka-Bruce, including the provision he could no longer examine female patients unless accompanied by a female nurse.

Nanka-Bruce has hired Toronto lawyer Brian Greenspan to represent him.
