A rather unusual getaway vehicle was employed after a man crashed a truck in Bracebridge on Wednesday morning.

At around 8 a.m. Dec. 5, members of the Bracebridge Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were called to assist at a collision on the southbound lanes of Highway 11, south of Cedar Lane.

A pickup truck towing three snowmobiles had crashed into the ditch, and the driver fled on foot.

The man allegedly stole a canoe and paddled into Bracebridge, where he was located by police and taken into custody.

The suspect, a 52-year-old Huntsville man, was charged with possession of stolen property, breach of probation, theft and break and enter.

He was scheduled to appear in court in Bracebridge on Thursday.

Witnesses to the incident are asked to phone the OPP at 705-645-2211 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
